• Chicago Cubs baseball night at Raw
19 Aug 2008

Chicago Cubs star pitchers Ryan Dempster, a two-time All-Star, and Bob Howry, made the short trip from Wrigley Field to Allstate Arena to enjoy Raw live. Before witnessing the action, the teammates of the NL Central Division-leading “Cubbies” were special guests on a brand-new episode of Santino’s Casa, airing this Thursday.

“You’ve got to remember, especially where we are, to think of the little people like Santino. To be able to help him out, that’s what we’re here to do,” Dempster, who was named one of the 99 “Good Guys” in professional sports by The Sporting News, joked. “I enjoy seeing these guys. I think they’re unbelievable athletes. The grind they put their bodies through 250 to 350 days a year is pretty remarkable. WWE events get bigger and better each year.”

During the baseball season, Dempster and Howry sometimes find themselves watching WWE programming in the clubhouse or on TiVo. Howry spends hours on his days off watching several weeks of Raw shows to get caught up.

“I’m just a big WWE fan. Any time we see them on the schedule in the same city we’re in, we make it a priority to go,” Howry said. “My favorite guys to watch today are Triple H and Batista. Like the name says, he’s an Animal. At the same time, I also enjoy seeing the new guys like Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.”

CHICAGO – When Raw rolled into World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk’s hometown on Monday night, the Straightedge Superstar was riding high after his successful title defense against JBL at SummerSlam. By the end of the night, however, things were looking more grim. Not only did General Manager Mike Adamle set an unprecedented “Championship Scramble” with Punk facing off against John Cena, Batista, Kane and JBL at Unforgiven, but the Straightedge Champion also suffered a defeat at the hands of Chris Jericho.

• World Heavyweight Championship Scramble Match Preview
18 Aug 2008

One ring, five men, 20 minutes. It’s all sure to add up to one of the most unpredictable matches in WWE history.

Raw General Manager Mike Adamle announced what he dubbed a “Championship Scramble” Match for Unforgiven. In what promises to be a thrilling World Heavyweight Title bout, reigning champion CM Punk and four former World Champions – Kane, JBL, Batista and John Cena – will battle in the ring at the same time for 20 minutes.

Once the clock starts, it’s every man for himself. If any of the Superstars scores a pinfall or submission on any of their competitors, they become the current champion. But that’s not nearly the end of it.

The championship can change hands several times throughout the 20 minute time frame. Whoever the champion is when the clock stops will officially be recognized as the World Heavyweight Champion.

While current champion Punk fended off title challenges by Batista and more recently showed his resilience against JBL, none of those trials can compare to the carnage the fighting champion is certain to face when he sets foot in the ring at Unforgiven.

With so many heated rivalries ricocheting throughout the Quicken Loans Arena, who will get caught in the crossfire? How will alliances form and falter? And just who among the five will emerge victorious when the final bell sounds?

• SummerSlam 2008
17 Aug 2008

Two of the most dominant WWE Superstars of this decade – Batista and John Cena – weaved very parallel career paths that ultimately intersected at SummerSlam, and the eagerly anticipated one-on-one confrontation ended with The Animal roaring in victory.

The blockbuster battle more than six years in the making was a match for the ages. When both men first debuted in 2002, perhaps only a few of sports-entertainment’s most erudite maestros could foresee the achievements that awaited Cena and Batista.

From their initial appearances on SmackDown to each man’s respective World Championship triumph at WrestleMania 21 (the first of several for both), The Animal and the Chain Gang Commander would permanently alter the WWE landscape.

Their first-ever singles bout at SummerSlam was no different, as the Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer bore one of the most memorable and iconic collisions for all time. But, like other much lauded SummerSlam showdowns including WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hit Man” Hart vs. British Bulldog in 1992 and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. Undertaker in ’98, only one man could emerge the victor.

Each Superstar familiar with having the distinct strength advantage, the very recent former co-holders of the World Tag Team Titles unleashed a torrent of power moves that would have easily finished many other contenders. They even ventured into the submission realm; Cena locking in the STFU and Batista clinching his mentor Ric Flair’s signature Figure-Four Leglock.
